The ST-1 Institutional Piano is a powerhouse performer for institutional settings. Its exclusive Millennium III Upright Action features ABS-Carbon parts that are incredibly strong and lightweight – properties that allowed our engineers to optimize speed, repetition, power and control. Its five sturdy back posts measure 80mm x 80mm for maximum rigidity and stable tuning.
The 47″ raised music rest is the longest on any institutional piano – perfect for sheet music that extends laterally. Longer keys provide more consistent touch response, and its “Soft Fall” Fallboard closing system protects hands and the piano’s finish from the harm that a jarring close might cause. - Millennium III upright action
The revolutionary Millennium III Upright Action features Kawai’s exclusive ABS-Carbon parts that are incredibly strong and lightweight – properties that allowed our engineers to optimize speed, repetition, power and control.
ABS-Carbon parts are resistant to swelling and shrinking due to climate, which helps the ST-1 maintain stable touch and tone over time better than any comparable instrument.
- Extended length keys
The ST-1's keysticks are longer than those found on comparable pianos, providing more consistent touch response from the front to the back of the playing surface.
The benefits to the player are greater control and touch accuracy, as well as the ability to achieve more power with less effort.
- Microcell-Enhanced Repetition
To further elevate the Millennium III action's performance, advanced microcellular foam is used for the hammer rail's rest cushion.
The specially developed properties of this innovative material improve repetition reliability, and help to increase the ST-1’s overall playing speed.

- Soundboard and Ribs
The most important sound-producing parts of a piano are the soundboard and ribs. The choice of materials and the manner in which they are assembled can greatly affect volume and tone quality.
Kawai's wood specialists select only the finest spruce for the soundboard and ribs to ensure maximum dynamic range and superb tone across the entire spectrum of sound. The ST-1 boasts an exceptionally large soundboard area for greater tonal power and resonance.

- Pinblocks
The ST-1's pinblock is made from the finest North American hard maple and spruce, cross-laminated in 13 plies to assure that the tuning pins remain tightly fitted through a lifetime of music-making.

- Bridges
The bridges are made from select hard maple, individually notched for a clear, powerful tone quality. Height is carefully set and matched to the iron plate for correct string pressure and optimal tonal transfer.
- “Matched Strength” Plate Design
The cast iron plate is subjected to as much as 20 tons of string tension. We use modern CAD technology to match the strength and natural resonances of the plate to the requirements of its design. The proper combination of plate design, back post structure and string tension provides enhanced tuning stability for decades of reliable performance.
- Tuning Pins
The ST-1's tuning pins are 64mm in length and manufactured to rigid specifications using nickel-plated carbon steel.
Our precision thread-cutting process produces a pin with tremendous “reverse-grip” holding power, ensuring that the instrument remains in tune for extended periods, and delivers exceptional stability and tonal quality.
- Back Posts
With five powerful back posts, each measuring 80mm by 80mm, the ST-1 back assembly stands alone among its peers for its strength.
Kawai's laminated back post construction method offers maximum rigidity, with two sturdy nose bolts connecting the cast iron plate helping to provide enhanced tuning stability over decades of rigorous use.

The ST-1's convenient double-locking system secures the lid and the piano fallboard to help keep the instrument safe and firmly in place.
- Cast Brass Pedals
Our exclusive Cast Brass Pedals are extremely rugged. Made with a permanently bonded brass layer over an aluminium core, they are significantly stronger and more durable than conventional “capped” pedals for lasting beauty and silent operation.
The centre pedal activates the mute rail for quiet practice.
- Double Rubber Casters
To meet the rigorous specifications of academic environments, the ST-1 is equipped with rubber casters at both the front and the rear of the piano.
These casters feature both double rubber wheels and a double ball bearing construction to ensure smooth, easy movement, and excellent durability throughout the lifetime of the instrument.
