Note: This article is written for the ES920 and ES520, however the information and suggestions are also relevant for older generation models such as the ES8, ES7, ES6, etc.

If the built-in speakers on your ES920 or ES520 portable digital piano are not producing sound, even when the Master Volume slider is set to a normal level, please check the following:

1. Speaker On/Off switch
The ES920, ES520 feature a Speaker On/Off switch located on the rear connector panel of the instrument.

This switch is set to the "On" position by default, as this is the most common configuration.  However, in certain scenarios it may be desirable to set the switch to the "Off" position in order to disable the instrument's built-in speakers.

If your ES920 or ES920 is no longer producing sound from its speakers, please check that the Speaker On/Off switch is set to the "On" position.  When set to "Off", no sound will be produced by the speakers, and a muted speaker icon will be shown in the status bar of the display.

2. Headphones/headphone adapter connected
As with all Kawai digital and hybrid piano instruments, the ES920 and ES520's built-in speakers will stop producing sound when headphones (or a headphone adapter) are connected to either of the two Phones connectors.

If your ES920 or ES520 is no longer producing sound from its speakers, please check that headphones (or a headphone adapter) are not connected to the instrument.  When connected, no sound will be produced by the speakers, and a headphone icon will be shown in the status bar of the display.

3. Local Control setting
As with all Kawai digital and hybrid piano instruments, the ES920 and ES520 feature a "Local Control" setting, which determines whether the instrument will play an internal sound when the keys are pressed.  This setting is set to "On" by default, as this is the most common configuration.  However, it may be desirable to set Local Control to "Off" when using the instrument to control an external MIDI device that is also connected to the instrument's amplifier/speakers.

If your ES920 or ES520 is no longer producing sound from its speakers or headphones, please check that the Local Control setting is set to "On".  When set to "Off", no sound will be produced by the speakers or connected headphones.  For more information about Local Control and other MIDI settings, please refer to the separate ES920 or ES520 MIDI Settings Manual PDF, available via the links below:
