Kawai introduces solar power generation system at Ryuyo piano factory

Ryuyo Factory with Solar Power Generation Facilities

Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co., Ltd. would like to announce that as part of our efforts to reduce environmental impact, we will be implementing a solar power generation system at our Ryuoyo factory, which is a manufacturing facility for grand pianos and upright pianos. The solar power system will be operational starting from December 23, 2022.

The solar power generation system installed at the Ryuyo factory consists of 1,542 solar panels with a total panel area of approximately 3,352 square meters. It is expected to generate approximately 781 MWh of electricity annually, covering approximately 18% of the factory's power consumption. This initiative will enable environmentally friendly power generation through renewable energy sources and is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 245 tons per year. The introduction of renewable energy is a first-time endeavour for our company group.

As part of our sustainability policy, the Kawai group strives for sustainable development by pursuing corporate activities aimed at enhancing instrument manufacturing and contributing to musical culture while ensuring harmony with the Earth's environment, society, and the soundness of our management. Kawai is committed to collaborating with all stakeholders, including our customers, to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.

Furthermore, the Kawai group has identified efforts to prevent global warming as a key focus of our environmental management and is actively promoting energy-saving measures to reduce CO2 emissions resulting from energy consumption. In fiscal year 2021, Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co., Ltd. received an "S-Class" evaluation, the highest rating under the business classification evaluation system based on the Energy Conservation Act, for the sixth consecutive year, while Kawai Precision Metal Co., Ltd. received the same rating for the second consecutive year. ■ About Ryuyo Factory

The Ryuyo Factory was completed in October 1980 with the vision of its founder, Koichi Kawai, to pursue the goal of creating the world's finest pianos. Spanning a wide area (total site area: 168,218 square meters), the factory is adorned with approximately 30,000 trees, creating a setting often referred to as the "workshop in the woods". It is here that the craftsmanship of skilled artisans harmonises with cutting-edge scientific techniques, making it our Kawai's flagship manufacturing facility.
